The attackers stole several million dollars from a whale that owned a large amount of tokens of the decentralized finance protocol GMX. Accordingly, on January 3, the community discovered a suspicious transaction of GMS token. Soon after, security firms including Certik and PeckShield announced these transactions as a mining operation, draining a whale worth $3.4 million worth of GMX tokens.

According to information from the data analytics platform Lookonchain, the hacker has now taken control of 82.519 GMX tokens, which they exchanged for 2.627 Ether.

Immediately after the attack, the value of the GMX coin dropped to 38 USD, however, the price of the coin recovered shortly after. This is a common action of the community after bad news takes place. Some users observed the impact of this attack through the graph, and a series of negative comments appeared on social networking sites.

As can be seen, DeFi attackers are active during the holidays. Specifically, on December 25, a loan attack happened and assets worth 12 million USD were stolen. A day later, there was another DeFi hack, with the hacker withdrawing about 8 million USD from the BitKeep wallet via compromised APKs.
